The rapidly evolving field of Biotechnology holds the opportunity and potential to solve many of the healthcare challenges we face in our world today and in the future. I am in a unique position at BioPharmaSpec in that my role by day is Quality Assurance Associate in our Pennsylvania lab (USA) and by night I am a Professor of Biological Sciences.
In my first role, I have the opportunity to interact daily with our clients who are developing new and enhanced biopharmaceuticals. In my second, I teach and empower a new generation of students in biotech, which becomes pivotal in fostering innovation, driving scientific discovery, and preparing the next generation of scientific leaders.
Biotechnology encompasses a wide range of applications, from genetics, engineering, biological sciences, pharmaceuticals, and environmental sustainability and is thus inherently interdisciplinary, combining knowledge from biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.
Empowering students begins with providing a solid foundation in the fundamental principles of biology, chemistry, and technology. Educational institutions and educators play a crucial role in creating a curriculum that not only imparts theoretical knowledge but also encourages hands-on experience through laboratory work and projects.
Many of my students come from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds. Encouraging students of diversity fosters new ideas and breaks down barriers which leads to global scientific innovation. Instilling this mindset equips students with the skills to translate scientific discoveries into innovative ideas. Students become interested in biotech when they realize that science is for everyone and want to consider a career in biotech.
I provide my students with collaborative projects that involve working with students from various disciplines and which help foster a holistic understanding of biotechnology.
This is an important aspect which will prepare them for the collaborative nature of the industry. My experience as a QA Associate has provided me with many lessons in the importance of collaboration and leadership. This gives me the opportunity to teach students to recognize the importance of documenting processes, reviewing, identifying problems, and optimizing workflows. This prepares them to address inefficiencies, to improve productivity and achieve success.

We prioritize documentation procedures and ongoing training. As part of our process, we have an extensive in-house training program which builds the knowledge to develop a comprehensive picture of biopharmaceuticals. We believe that investment in training of both new and established staff is an essential pillar of our Quality System.
In essence, the future of science is created by teaching a sense of wonder that encourages and empowers students to want to understand and solve today’s global problems.
