Definition

A post translational modification (PTM) involving the removal of one or more amide groups from a polypeptide molecule. A chemical reaction in which an amide functional group on the side chain of the amino acids asparagine or glutamine is removed, typically converting asparagine to aspartic acid or isoaspartic acid and glutamine to glutamic acid or pyroglutamic acid.
