Methylation

Categories: Glossary: Peptide Mapping , impurities , mass spectrometry , post translational modification

Definition

A post-translational modification involving the addition of a methyl group at various residues (commonly lysine or arginine). The reverse reaction is called demethylation.

BioPharmaSpec assesses for methylation using a combination of intact molecular weight analysis (to show a mass difference from the expected) and peptide mapping (to confirm the PTM and assess for the site of the modification).
