Plant Molecular Farming (PMF)

Categories: Glossary: Glycosylation , post translational modification

Definition

The production of proteins, peptides and small molecules through the use of plant biotechnology. The technology involves insertion of foreign genes coding for the desired protein into the plant. The whole plant, tissues or cells can be used. Pharmaceuticals (therapeutic proteins, antibodies and vaccines) and “functional” foods and nutraceuticals have been produced.
