Post Translational Modification (PTM)

Categories: characterization , post translational modification

Definition

A change that occurs in a protein following its production, or “translation”, from the coding mRNA chain. PTMs are a diverse group of biochemical and chemical modifications to the protein that can be naturally derived, such as glycosylation, disulfide bridge formation and proteolytic processing. Other PTMs are associated with chemical modifications, as a result of amino acid side chain interactions, such as oxidation, deamidation and glycation.
